A new report of kittens being shot in a park in Livadia has sparked outrage, the Cyprus Greens said Wednesday, warning that violence against animals in the Larnaca district is escalating.

The party said the incident follows earlier complaints about dogs being shot, adding that the pattern shows animal abuse “is now taking on dangerous dimensions.”

According to local reports, newborn kittens found in the park appeared to have been shot with an air gun. Oroklini Police have opened an investigation.

The Greens called the act “abhorrent” and said it must not be treated as an isolated case. They urged authorities — including the Animal Police and local councils — to strengthen checks, respond quickly to citizen complaints and take all necessary steps to prevent and prosecute such offenses.

The party said it will push to upgrade attempted killing or serious harm to animals to a felony offense, arguing that animal protection is a matter of “culture, legality and social responsibility.”
