Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Culture Vasiliki Kassianidou on Tuesday welcomed the handover of 258 digitized archival documents to the Grigoris Afxentiou Research Center, calling the initiative an important step in supporting historical research and public access to state records.

The material, drawn from Special Court collections held by the State Archives, includes primary sources relevant to the circumstances surrounding the death of EOKA fighter Grigoris Afxentiou, one of the most prominent figures of Cyprus’ anti‑colonial struggle.

Kassianidou said the digitization effort strengthens efforts to study modern Cypriot history “with scientific methodology, seriousness and respect for historical truth.” She noted that the compilation of the material was carried out voluntarily by lawyer Elias Stefanou, describing it as an example of shared responsibility for preserving historical memory.

The State Archives now operate under the Deputy Ministry of Culture, which Kassianidou said reinforces the government’s broader strategy to safeguard archival heritage and ensure public access.

She praised both the research center and the State Archives for their cooperation, saying the initiative will contribute to deeper understanding of Cyprus’ past and the preservation of collective memory.
