Details have emerged of a homeless man who built a makeshift “house” under a wooden jetty in Limassol during the recent cold period.
The structure was spotted by a local resident who informed Sigma, a local TV channel, that the pier is a well-known spot frequented by walkers, making it surprising that authorities failed to notice it.
The resident recounted, “We notified them, and they called us liars, so I was forced to produce documents.”
He further added, “When I first saw the homeless man covered up at the pier, it was the day that was announced as the coldest night. How did this man make it through the night?”
Homelessness in Cyprus is a growing issue, with many struggling to afford housing.
The government has yet to address the problem effectively, and efforts by shelters like SXEDiA provide some relief but are not enough.
The lack of data on the homeless population and a national homelessness strategy exacerbate the situation.
