FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – — Cyprus is facing extreme heat Sunday, with temperatures expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) in inland areas, prompting authorities to issue weather alerts.
The Meteorological Service placed a yellow warning in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday, followed by an orange warning from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. due to dangerously high temperatures.
Forecasters said the weather will be mostly clear and very hot, with some localized cloud cover over mountainous regions in the afternoon.
Winds will vary across the island, shifting to southwesterly to northwesterly by late afternoon at speeds of 3 to 4 Beaufort. Seas are expected to be calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures are forecast to hit 43°C inland, 37°C along the southern, eastern and northern coasts, and 34°C in western coastal areas and higher elevations.
Overnight, skies will remain mostly clear. Winds will be light and variable, and temperatures will drop to 27°C inland, 26°C along the coast, and 24°C in the mountains.
The hot, dry conditions are expected to persist through Wednesday, with no significant change in temperature. Authorities warn that temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages.
