Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris has met with a delegation from the Council of Europe Development Bank to review progress on plans for new prison facilities.
The ministry said the talks covered conditions at the Central Prisons, the needs of the corrections system and the next steps in preparing the project.
Officials discussed the feasibility study, technical and operational requirements and the process for securing specialised technical and advisory support.
Fytiris said new prisons are essential, noting that despite measures to ease overcrowding and expand alternative sentencing, existing facilities cannot meet demand. The ministry said work on the project is continuing.
