Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris has attended a joint firefighting exercise near the Larnaca Salt Lake, where police aviation units, the Fire Service and the volunteer group SupportCY tested their response to a fast‑moving blaze.

The drill simulated a fire breaking out in reeds and dense dry vegetation, spreading rapidly due to strong winds and threatening nearby residential areas. Ground crews and aircraft were deployed immediately, while a helicopter‑support unit set up an inflatable water tank to enable continuous refilling.

During the exercise, a police helicopter carried out water drops, demonstrating the importance of alternative water‑collection points and rapid operational coordination.

Fytiris said ongoing training and realistic simulations are essential for effective wildfire response. “Prevention and preparedness are crucial. Exercises like this strengthen coordination among all agencies and ensure the country can respond swiftly and effectively to protect lives, the environment and property,” he said.

He also highlighted the value of cooperation between state services, volunteer groups and private organizations, especially ahead of the wildfire season.

The ministry said it will continue investing in prevention, training and operational readiness to bolster Cyprus’ resilience against fire risks.
