Cypriot Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou has declared March as the “month of civil protection and civil defense.”
At a recent press conference, Ioannou introduced a new electronic application called “SafeCY,” which will allow citizens to locate the nearest emergency shelter.
Currently, existing shelters in Cyprus can protect only 30 percent of the population. Ioannou stated that the aim is to find additional locations for emergency shelters, with the goal of covering 70 percent of the population in the coming months.
This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to enhance civil defense and transform it into a civil protection directorate.
Ioannou emphasized the importance of educating citizens on preventing and responding to emergencies, especially given the increasing frequency of natural disasters and other emergencies.
