FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE— Temperatures in Cyprus reached 46.1 degrees Celsius (115°F) on Wednesday in the village of Lefkara, approaching the country’s highest recorded temperature of 46.2°C set in September 2020 at Athalassa National Forest Park.
The heat affected inland plains, mountainous and semi-mountainous regions, and southern coastal areas, prompting red alerts from authorities and warnings to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
The extreme conditions led to a few brief localized power outages, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure struggled to meet demand.
Meteorologists said the spike is part of a prolonged heatwave gripping the island, with forecasts indicating little relief in the coming days.
Cyprus regularly experiences high summer temperatures, but Wednesday’s reading was among the most severe in recent years.
