FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE— Cyprus may face rolling power cuts due to high electricity demand driven by extreme temperatures, the country’s Transmission System Operator (TSOC) said Wednesday.

In a statement, the TSOC said electricity supply is expected to be stretched to its limits between 6:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

If necessary, controlled load shedding may be implemented for safety reasons, with outages not exceeding 30 minutes per group of consumers.

On Tuesday, August 12, at 6:41 p.m., the National Energy Control Center carried out a scheduled rotation of power cuts affecting five consumer groups, with a maximum outage duration of 18 minutes. The decision followed a spike in demand due to high temperatures and a technical failure at the Vasilikos Power Station, which forced the shutdown of a generation unit.

Efforts to restore generation capacity are ongoing, though technical challenges remain.

The TSOC urged consumers to continue limiting electricity use during peak hours and emphasized that any load shedding will be carried out with safety and system stability as the top priority.
