FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The 2024 World Air Quality Report by IQAir reveals that Nicosia is the third most polluted capital city in the European Union.
The city recorded an annual average PM2.5 pollution level of 15.2 µg/m³, far exceeding the WHO’s recommended limit of 5 µg/m³.
Only Bucharest, Romania (15.7 µg/m³) and Ljubljana, Slovenia (15.6 µg/m³) recorded higher pollution levels among EU capitals.
Globally, Nicosia ranks 62nd out of 138 capital cities, underlining persistent air quality issues despite local environmental efforts.
Cyprus, as a country, ranks 87th worldwide, with an average PM2.5 concentration of 12.7 µg/m³.
