FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Swimmers at Oroklini Beach were alarmed Thursday after spotting oil slicks both in the water and along the shoreline, prompting concerns over pollution and public safety.
Photos from the scene showed black patches staining the sea and sand, accompanied by a strong smell of fuel, according to local reports.
Oroklini Deputy Mayor Neophytos Fakontis said the Department of Fisheries was notified immediately to investigate the source of the contamination. As of Friday, Fakontis confirmed that the beach and surrounding waters had been cleaned, and the public had begun returning to the sea.
Authorities have not yet released details on the origin of the spill.
