LOFOU, Cyprus — President Nikos Christodoulides said Saturday that the right to protest is protected and not prohibited, responding to criticism following recent clashes outside the Foreign Ministry.
Speaking at a public event in the village of Lofou, the president noted that protest events are frequently organised across the country and that the police had issued a clear statement regarding the incident.
Addressing criticism from the opposition party AKEL, Christodoulides said the legislation passed by a parliamentary majority simply requires the appointment of a responsible organiser for such gatherings. He added that the law has been misrepresented in public debate.
