FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cypriot Energy Minister George Papanastasiou has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the “Great Sea Interconnector” (GSI), a strategic project that aims to link Cyprus and Greece via undersea electricity cables.
Responding to a parliamentary inquiry from MP Irene Charalambidou, Papanastasiou emphasized that connecting Cyprus to other countries’ power grids is a top priority due to its wide-ranging benefits.
These include strengthening energy supply security, reducing outages, boosting renewable energy production, lowering air pollution, and enhancing cross-border electricity trade and competitiveness.
The GSI project, which also envisions future connectivity with Israel, will not be preceded by any bilateral agreements until its framework is fully established.
Papanastasiou noted that if the GSI is integrated into the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), it could gain significant geostrategic importance.
He added that the project could serve as a vital energy bridge between European markets and Middle Eastern and Asian networks
