FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – More than 300 violations were reported during an awareness and enforcement campaign on seat belt and child seat use, held between March 10 and 16, 2025, across the road network of Cyprus.

The campaign, conducted under the coordination of the European Traffic Police Network (ROADPOL), recorded 305 complaints for seat belt violations. Among these, 255 involved front-seat passengers, while 50 were for rear-seat passengers. Additionally, authorities reported 10 violations concerning the improper use of child seats and two cases of vehicles lacking a seat belt system.

The European initiative aims to reduce serious and fatal road collisions while emphasizing the life-saving importance of seat belts and child restraints. According to statistics from 2021 to 2023, 52.5% of drivers and passengers killed in road accidents were not wearing seat belts.

Authorities stress that seat belts significantly lower the risk of severe injuries and fatalities in crashes, urging drivers and passengers alike to prioritize safety on the roads.
