FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Authorities in Cyprus reported a record-breaking volume of drug seizures in 2025, with cannabis remaining the most commonly confiscated substance.
According to the daily Phileleftheros, police seized 588 kilograms of cannabis by Aug. 11.
That figure is slightly below the 618 kilograms seized in all of 2024, the paper noted.
Cocaine seizures also increased, with 39 kilograms confiscated so far this year, compared to 54 kilograms in 2024.
The report detailed quantities and types of other narcotics seized and highlighted that between 150 and 200 young people are referred to treatment programs annually due to drug use.
The Cyprus Anti-Drug Council warned that the country is increasingly overwhelmed by drug trafficking and abuse.
Officials said narcotics are being smuggled in bulk through airports, courier services and postal channels.
Authorities expressed growing concern over the involvement of younger individuals in drug possession and trafficking.
The rate of student drug use in schools is also reportedly rising.
