A Greek Cypriot man and his six illegal employees were arrested this morning at a potato packing facility in Ormidhia, following a joint operation by SBA Police and the Republic of Cyprus authorities to combat modern-day slavery, immigration, and illegal employment.
Six employees, from Congo and Cameroon, faced charges for overstaying and working illegally at the farm, while the employer was charged with illegal employment. The employees will be handed over to Cyprus Police Immigration for deportation.
The operation involved four SBA Police officers, seven Customs officers, and eight members of the Republic of Cyprus Immigration and Labor and Social Insurance office.
SBA Police Chief Inspector Fanos Christodoulou stated, “This was a highly successful operation working alongside our colleagues from CyPol and SBA Customs, emphasizing the close working relationship and team effort. We take this type of crime very seriously and will continue to carry out operations of this nature in the future.”
