A Cypriot court sentenced a Syrian refugee boat captain to three years in prison on Friday for negligence leading to the death of a three-year-old girl during a sea crossing from Lebanon a year ago.

The court heard that the captain ordered 60 passengers to discard food and water to conceal their departure point, local media reported. Read the story>>>

Thousands of schoolchildren across Cyprus are collecting used cooking oil from their homes to be recycled into biofuel as part of a nationwide environmental initiative, a non-governmental organization announced on Thursday.

The project, known as “Frying Pan Movement”, is coordinated by the AKTI Project and Research Center, a Cyprus-based environmental organization focused on sustainability and education. World Wetlands Day on February 2 saw the Akrotiri Environmental and Education Centre (AEEC) host ‘A Secret Paradise’ event for the public.

Targeting all age groups, it was organised alongside the Republic of Cyprus Unit for Environmental Education and Sustainable Development to maximise awareness of the wetlands and the importance of its restoration.

A 36-year-old Egyptian man was sentenced to 18 months and one week imprisonment in Dhekelia on January 29 after being found guilty of Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH).
