World Wetlands Day on February 2 saw the Akrotiri Environmental and Education Centre (AEEC) host ‘A Secret Paradise’ event for the public.
Targeting all age groups, it was organised alongside the Republic of Cyprus Unit for Environmental Education and Sustainable Development to maximise awareness of the wetlands and the importance of its restoration.
Bases and RoC families visited the centre, taking part in various activities, including the exploration of interactive dioramas, and basket weaving.
Others watched a documentary showing the Akrotiri peninsula, used telescopes to observe the species it hosts and learn about various insects and the different types of vegetation and how it shapes the rich biodiversity of the peninsula.
AEEC manager, Thomas Hadjikyriakou, stressed the importance of World Wetlands Day and revealed his excitement when welcoming visitors to the centre.
He said: “World Wetlands Day is a big event worldwide and we always enjoy welcoming people at the centre to learn more about the day and to also show them what we do here at the centre, as the work carried out by the staff is remarkable”.
Georgia Theodorou AEEC Assistant added: “The event was a heartfelt tribute to the hidden paradise of Akrotiri’s wetlands, a designated Ramsar site of international importance.
“We celebrated to raise awareness about the vital role these ecosystems play in sustaining biodiversity and supporting our communities.
“By exploring the beauty and diversity of our wetlands, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation and commitment to protecting these precious habitats for future generations”.
