Cyprus will build a new central prison complex in an isolated area of Mathiatis at a cost of more than €300 million, Justice Minister Anna Koukkides‑Procopiou told lawmakers Tuesday as she outlined a broad reform plan for the country’s correctional system.

The new facility will have an initial capacity of about 1,500 inmates, with room for future expansion.

Officials say the project is expected to act as a development hub for the wider area, creating demand for services and local businesses.

The minister said construction and maintenance will be carried out by a private contractor, while the state will retain full control over security operations.

As part of the reform effort, the Justice Ministry is moving ahead with the hiring of 90 new correctional officers, who will undergo three months of training outside the existing prison.
