Cyprus to roll out Next Generation 112 emergency system within 20 months

Cyprus is preparing to deploy a new Next Generation 112 (NG112) emergency call system, expected to be delivered and operational within 20 months, capable of handling voice calls, real-time text messages, images, video, location data and automatic eCall alerts from vehicles.

Officials say the upgrade will give first responders fuller and faster information during critical incidents, where every second can prove decisive. The system will function as the national Emergency Call Reception Centre, serving all response services across the Republic.

Authorities were keen to stress that 112 and CY-Alert are separate systems. “One (112) is used by citizens to contact state services when they need help, and CY-Alert is the new Public Warning System developed to alert and inform the population,” an official said.

The 112 service currently falls under police control, but the state has decided to transfer its operation to Civil Defence, a move now underway.

Officials said the new system would allow for faster, more effective responses from the relevant services, enabling unified management of all emergency communications at national level. It will also ensure equal access to emergency services for people with disabilities, in line with European standards.

Civil Defence will take over responsibility for operating the system, working in cooperation with the other services involved.
