Cyprus water board urges households to fit free saving devices as consumption rises

The Department of Water Development is calling on households across Cyprus to install free water-saving equipment they have already received, as part of the “Water, also for tomorrow” campaign run by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

So far, roughly 35 per cent of the free packages earmarked for distribution have reached consumers.

The rollout has been completed in Paphos and Famagusta and is gradually being extended to the remaining districts.

Despite the campaign, the department said water consumption remains higher than the same period last year, underlining the need for stronger saving measures and more rational use of water across the board.

Officials are urging anyone who has already received free tap nozzles and shower flow reducers to fit them without delay, describing it as a simple step that can cut water use significantly without affecting comfort. Verified data show the devices can reduce consumption by up to 30 per cent, the department said.

Households that have not yet received the free equipment can also buy similar low-cost nozzles on the market, allowing every property to contribute to the effort regardless of whether they are on the distribution list.

The department is also asking anyone who has received nozzles to report this through its online “Nozzle Installation Notification” service, which allows citizens to learn more about the campaign, pick up tips on reducing water use, and formally declare that they have installed the equipment.

Officials say the declarations are key to monitoring the campaign’s progress and measuring its impact.

Submission is free of charge through the online service.

The department stressed that saving water is not just about equipment, but also daily habits, avoiding waste, fixing leaks promptly and using water sparingly remain essential to protecting the country’s water resources.

“Every drop counts,” the department said, calling on all citizens to install any nozzles they have received, declare them online, and continue practising rational water use.
