At least 718 people have been killed in the past week in violent clashes in Sweida province, southern Syria, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

Earlier reports had placed the death toll at nearly 600.

The latest wave of violence stems from escalating confrontations between Sunni Bedouin groups and the Druze community, with the Druze-majority city of Sweida experiencing the brunt of the unrest.

In a related development, Israel and Syria reportedly agreed to a ceasefire overnight, according to U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack.
