The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) advises European Union airlines to avoid Russian airspace due to the danger posed by the country’s air defenses.

EASA advises against all movements west of 60 degrees east longitude, i.e. in Russian airspace.

In a message published online, EASA highlights five areas that airlines should specifically avoid: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don and Samara.

The recommendation is valid until the end of July 2025.

EASA issued its new recommendation after the Russian air defense shot down an Azerbaijan Airlines plane in December.
