FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Ecuador has deployed 1,500 soldiers to the Amazon region in an intensified campaign against guerrilla fighters following deadly clashes, the Ministry of Defense announced last night.
The government is sending special forces, intelligence, and anti-terror units after at least 11 soldiers were killed in an operation targeting illegal mining near the border with Peru.
Authorities claim guerrilla fighters attacked with explosives, grenades, and firearms.
Officials in Quito have blamed defectors from Colombia’s former rebel group, Farc, for the assault.
