The discovery is the largest in 25 years and was made off the coast of Brazil, just over 400 kilometers off Rio de Janeiro, according to the British oil company.
BP is one of the world’s largest oil companies.
Last year, it backed down on its goal of sharply reducing oil and gas production, which was originally intended to be limited in favor of renewable energy.
