Egypt’s national dish, Koshary, has been officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for 2025, the Ministry of Culture announced Wednesday.

The inclusion marks the 11th item registered in Egypt’s name on UNESCO’s intangible heritage lists. Culture Minister Ahmed Fouad Hanno said the recognition highlights global interest in Egyptians’ daily life culture, calling it an authentic part of national identity.

“Koshary is the first Egyptian dish to be registered,” Hanno noted, adding that more elements tied to social and cultural practices are expected to follow in coming years. He said the listing reflects Egypt’s success in documenting and protecting its heritage.

Koshary, one of Egypt’s most popular staple meals, combines pasta, rice, black lentils, chickpeas and fried onions, topped with tangy tomato sauce. Vinegar, lemon and chili sauce are common additions. Widely regarded as a low‑cost, high‑calorie dish, it is accessible to all segments of society.
