The Council of the European Union on Monday renewed its sweeping economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, even as European governments move to pursue direct contact with Moscow amid U.S.-led talks involving Ukraine and Russia.
The sanctions, first imposed in 2014 and significantly expanded after February 2022, cover trade, finance, energy, technology and dual‑use goods, along with industry, transport and luxury items, the Council said.
In addition to extending the economic measures until July 31, 2026, the EU has recently adopted further punitive steps. Last week, the bloc approved sanctions on individuals and entities accused of supporting Russia’s so‑called “shadow fleet” of oil tankers, as well as separate measures targeting alleged Russian hybrid operations. It also banned an additional 41 Russian vessels said to be linked to the shadow fleet.
