Farmers and livestock breeders protesting delayed EU subsidy payments forced the suspension of all flights at Heraklion International Airport N. Kazantzakis on Monday after occupying the runway.

Protesters gathered early in the morning and broke through police lines to reach the site, the state-run AMNA news agency reported. Minor scuffles occurred as officers attempted to block access.

In western Crete, demonstrators shut the main gate at Chania Airport, preventing travelers from entering or leaving except in medical emergencies.

The blockade followed clashes involving stone-throwing and the use of tear gas and flash grenades.

Protests also spread to mainland Greece.

In Karditsa, farmers dumped animal feed outside the office of Rural Development Minister Kostas Tsiaras before delivering a memorandum of demands.

Later, they blocked the E65 motorway.

Nationwide demonstrations began Nov. 30 after EU-funded agricultural subsidies were delayed due to a corruption investigation, leaving many producers facing financial shortfalls amid rising production costs.
