FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Finland will cease using coal for energy production this spring, as energy companies Helen and Vantaan Energia prepare to shut down their final coal-fired power plants, the government announced Tuesday.

This milestone comes four years ahead of the legal deadline of May 2029.

Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala highlighted the benefits of cleaner solutions, including reduced emissions and lower energy prices.

Finland began phasing out coal in the 2010s and passed pioneering legislation in 2019 banning its use as an energy source.

Helen and Vantaan Energia will transition to renewable and low-carbon technologies such as electric boilers, heat pumps, bioenergy, and waste heat recovery. Electricity production will rely on wind, nuclear, hydro, and solar power.

The move is expected to cut emissions, boost energy self-sufficiency, and support the adoption of innovative technologies, contributing to a more sustainable energy system for Finland.
