The spread of foot‑and‑mouth disease in Larnaca district has reached worrying levels, with confirmed cases now detected in 11 livestock units across Troulloi, Oroklini and Aradippou, authorities said Tuesday.
According to Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiadou, the affected animals exceed 13,000. Ten of the infected units are sheep and goat farms, while one involves cattle.
Georgiadou said culling and burial of infected animals has already begun.
Farmers, working with local authorities, are implementing additional biosecurity measures, including installing disinfectant tanks at the entrances of livestock zones to sanitize passing vehicles.
At the same time, police are investigating information suggesting possible concealment of cases. An investigative team has been set up to determine whether any criminal or other offences have been committed by individuals involved.
