FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited U.S. President Donald Trump to visit Berlin in their first official phone call, government sources said Friday.
Trump reportedly indicated he was open to the visit, which would mark only his second trip to Germany as president, aside from a stop at the Ramstein military base.
His previous visit was for the G20 summit in 2017.
During the 30-minute call on Thursday, Trump extended an invitation for Merz to visit Washington.
The chancellor has already expressed plans to travel to the United States ahead of the G7 summit in Canada in mid-June and the NATO summit in the Netherlands shortly afterward.
Ukraine was the primary focus of the conversation, with both leaders agreeing to cooperate closely on efforts to end Russia’s war, according to German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius.
