Cyprus has introduced a new category for chronic patients with multiple sclerosis, allowing them to visit neurologists without a referral, the Health Insurance Organization has said.

The category, which took effect March 27, covers beneficiaries diagnosed with multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis optica based on confirmation from a specialist neurologist.

The agency said the change aims to improve monitoring and management of patients by giving them direct access to their treating physicians.

Patients in the new category will pay a €6 copayment for visits, instead of the standard €25, provided they have not reached their annual copayment ceiling and do not belong to a group exempt from fees.

The organization said patients who qualify should contact their treating doctor for further information.
