President Nikos Christodoulides has said that a government is judged by how it handles crises, as he opened a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

He said the cabinet would approve a package of nine measures to address the foot‑and‑mouth outbreak.

The plan focuses on three goals: fully compensating affected farmers, supporting their income and restarting livestock production quickly.

The measures include tighter restrictions on farms operating inside the British Bases — particularly in Pergamos — and the creation of a special scientific committee headed by Stavros Malas.

Christodoulides said the government had supported livestock producers from the start of the crisis, announcing immediate financial assistance.

He said the first compensation payments have already begun and that all eligible farmers will receive funds by next week.
