FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Greece’s Parliament is set to vote Wednesday on a revised traffic code introducing escalating penalties for repeat offenders and harsher consequences for serious violations.

The new code targets offenses linked to high accident rates, including drunk driving, running red lights, excessive speeding, illegal street racing, and riding motorcycles without helmets.

Repeat violations will result in progressively stricter penalties, with some cases carrying sentences as severe as life imprisonment under the penal code.

The government is also launching a pilot metro and tram service on weekends to encourage younger citizens to avoid driving under the influence.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the new code a “responsible choice”, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement to change driving habits and reduce road fatalities.

He said the government is also investing in better roads, safer public transportation, and improved driver education.
