FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Greece is moving forward with plans to establish two marine parks in the Ionian Sea and the southern Cyclades, part of its broader environmental commitments and territorial strategy.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the initiative at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, emphasizing that the parks will significantly expand Greece’s protected marine areas. Once completed, they will push the country beyond the 30 percent conservation target set for 2030. Mitsotakis reaffirmed that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea remains the foundation for maritime governance.
The announcement follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for European partners to safeguard Greece and Cyprus against potential threats in the Eastern Mediterranean. Mitsotakis underscored the importance of secure underwater energy and data connections, calling them non-negotiable.
