ATHENS — A total of 75 cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and investigated in Greece since the start of the 2025 transmission season, according to the National Public Health Organization (EODY).
Of those, 62 patients developed symptoms affecting the central nervous system, including encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis. Thirteen cases presented mild symptoms or none at all.
In the past week alone, six new domestic cases were confirmed. Two additional cases were imported—one from Serbia and one from Italy—but are not included in the national analysis.
Five deaths have been recorded among patients over the age of 71 who experienced neuroinvasive disease. The median age of the deceased was 80, with ages ranging from 72 to 86.
Cases have been reported across 34 municipalities in 18 regional units, including West Attica, Western Athens, Piraeus, Islands, East Attica, Central Athens, Northern Athens, Ilia, Achaia, Aetolia-Acarnania, Evros, Larissa, Karditsa, Trikala, Arta, Pella, Imathia, and Corinth.
