The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, George Gerapetritis, has confirmed that research on the Cyprus-Greece electrical interconnection cable will proceed as planned.
In an interview with Kathimerini, Gerapetritis emphasized the importance of the European electrical interconnection program, particularly for Cyprus, as it aims to eliminate the island’s energy isolation.
Mr. Gerapetritis expressed hope that Turkey would not raise objections to the project and that there would be mutual understanding to ensure its progress.
He stated, “In case there is tension, we will attempt to decompress it.”
The Greek Foreign Minister also highlighted that the research and laying of surface electrical cables are “absolutely protected” by international law and do not require any permit.
The Cyprus-Greece electrical interconnection cable is part of the broader EuroAsia Interconnector project, which seeks to link the transmission networks of Greece, Cyprus, and eventually Israel. The project is expected to enhance energy security and integration in the region.
