Farmers across Greece stepped up protests Wednesday, expanding a blockade near Nikaia that again shut down the Athens‑Thessaloniki motorway, authorities said.

Tractors and farm machinery continued to arrive, with organizers predicting participation would grow over the next day, according to the Athens‑Macedonian News Agency. Farmers from Thessaly vowed to stay put, demanding relief from rising production costs, low crop prices and delayed subsidies.

A rally is planned Thursday in downtown Larissa ahead of the trial of several farmers arrested in recent protest incidents. Livestock producers staged a symbolic protest Tuesday in Larissa’s Central Square, spilling milk and dumping straw and corn outside the courthouse.

At the Kipi border crossing with Türkiye, freight truck traffic was halted for a second day as farmers blocked both inbound and outbound lanes. In northern Greece, protesters positioned tractors across part of the Egnatia Motorway near Niselio, leaving only a corridor for emergency vehicles.
