FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus recorded the highest adjusted incidence rate of new kidney failure cases in Europe in 2022, with 376 cases per 1 million population, compared to the European average of 158, Health Minister Michalis Damianos has said.

The minister noted that men are more likely to be diagnosed with kidney failure than women, and the majority of patients entering renal replacement therapy are aged 70 to 75.

Cyprus also has the highest percentage of patients with diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension as underlying causes of kidney disease, Damianos said, with nearly four in 10 patients diagnosed with diabetes and two in 10 with hypertension.
