FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Torrential rains across South Korea have killed at least 14 people and left 12 others missing, as landslides and flooding continue to batter parts of the country.
The latest fatality was reported in Gapyeong County, where five people were initially listed as missing. Heavy rain struck the area early Sunday, sweeping away vehicles and damaging homes.
On Saturday, landslides in Sancheong County in the south killed at least five and left two missing. Earlier in the week, four other deaths were linked to the extreme weather.
South Korea experiences annual monsoon rains, but this week’s downpours have been unusually intense, with some regions recording the highest hourly rainfall in decades. Emergency crews remain on alert as the weather system moves north.
