Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said Monday that the death toll from recent floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra has risen to 961, with 293 people still missing.
Search and rescue teams recovered 40 more bodies across affected areas.
BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said fatalities in Aceh climbed to 389, in North Sumatra to 338, and in West Sumatra to 234.
He added that the number of displaced residents has surged to more than 1,057,000, with evacuees concentrated in East Aceh and Bener Meriah regencies.
President Prabowo Subianto chaired a disaster response meeting Sunday after inspecting affected areas in Aceh.
He ordered strengthened joint operations involving the military, police, BNPB, and local governments to accelerate aid delivery, maintain security, and restore connectivity between regions cut off by the disaster.
