FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has revealed new details of Jupiter’s auroras, showing that the planet’s atmospheric light displays are more dynamic and intense than previously known.

Using Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), scientists observed the auroras on Dec. 25, 2023.

The research team, led by Jonathan Nichols of the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, found that Jupiter’s auroras are hundreds of times brighter and more energetic than those on Earth.

Auroras occur when charged particles collide with atmospheric gases near a planet’s magnetic poles, creating colorful light displays.

While Earth’s auroras are fueled by solar storms, Jupiter’s auroras also draw energy from its volcanically active moon, Io.

Webb’s advanced sensitivity has allowed astronomers to detect rapidly changing auroral patterns on Jupiter, offering fresh insights into the planet’s complex atmosphere.
