FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Residents of Larnaca got another peek at the USS Mount Whitney, the flagship and command ship of the United States 6th Fleet, which has docked at the main port.

This visit is part of the ongoing mission to foster cooperation between the US and Cyprus, underscoring the enduring partnership and mutual interests of both nations.

US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie S. Davis, highlighted the significance of the USS Mount Whitney’s visit, stating on the “X” platform that the ship’s presence would bolster bilateral relations and advance American interests in the region.

The visit not only symbolizes strategic collaboration but also plays a crucial role in regional operations.

Commissioned in 1971, the USS Mount Whitney serves as the command and control ship for the US 6th Fleet.

With cutting-edge technology and communication systems, the ship enables effective coordination and command during military operations, making it a pivotal asset in ensuring maritime security and maintaining stability in the Mediterranean region.

During its time in Larnaca, the USS Mount Whitney will engage in various operations and exercises, demonstrating the US commitment to regional security and cooperation.

THE SHIP

The USS Mount Whitney has a distinguished service history since its commissioning. Built by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, it is one of the two Blue Ridge-class amphibious command ships designed to provide integrated command and control facilities.

Throughout its service, the USS Mount Whitney has played a pivotal role in numerous military operations, including:

  • 1973 Yom Kippur War: The USS Mount Whitney played a crucial role in the US Navy’s operations during the Yom Kippur War. The ship provided command and control support for the US Sixth Fleet, which was involved in the Mediterranean Sea during the conflict.
  • 1983 Beirut Deployment: In response to the Lebanese Civil War, the USS Mount Whitney was deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean to support US military operations in Beirut. The ship served as a command and control center for the multinational peacekeeping force, coordinating efforts to stabilize the region.
  • NATO Exercises: Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the USS Mount Whitney participated in numerous NATO exercises, such as Exercise Ocean Safari and Exercise Display Determination.
