On March 7, 1964, the United Nations Security Council established the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) through Resolution 186.

The force was created in response to escalating intercommunal violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots following Cyprus’s independence from British rule in 1960.

UNFICYP’s primary mission was to prevent further fighting, restore law and order, and promote a return to normal conditions.

Since its establishment, the peacekeeping force has played a crucial role in maintaining stability on the island and facilitating negotiations for a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus problem.
