FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – North Cyprus’ Chief Administrative Auditor İlkan Varol has kicked-off an ex officio investigation into nightclubs following the much-publicized recent death in a club.

Varol highlighted the ‘serious public unrest’ regarding nightclubs, which have become a significant issue in the north.

She emphasized the necessity of conducting an investigation to address the numerous problems associated with such establishments.

The investigation comes after the tragic death of a 25-year-old woman in a nightclub in the north, which has sparked outrage and allegations of sexual slavery.

The woman reportedly took her own life at the cabaret where she was working. Turkish Cypriot opposition party CTP ‘MP’ Dogus Derya has accused the authorities of having “blood on their hands” and highlighted the likelihood that the woman was a victim of human trafficking

This incident has brought to light the systematic violence and exploitation faced by women working in nightclubs in the region.

Various organizations and political figures have called for action, highlighting the Turkish Cypriot administrations failure to address human trafficking and exploitation.

Varol stated that the investigation is being conducted “under the authority granted by Article 15, paragraph 1 of the Supreme Administrative Inspector (Ombudsman) Law No. 38/1996. ”

The extensive investigation aims to ‘address the concerns and restore public confidence,’ she said.
