Libya’s High National Elections Commission said Monday it has begun preparations to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in mid-April 2026.

In a statement, the commission said it is drafting and publishing regulatory frameworks for the vote and working on rules governing candidate nominations to give prospective contenders time to review requirements.

The commission urged the U.N. Support Mission in Libya to speed up efforts to resolve disputes over amendments to electoral laws proposed by the “6+6 Committee,” a body made up of six members from the eastern-based House of Representatives and six from the Tripoli-based High Council of State.

Libya has remained divided since the 2011 fall of Muammar Gaddafi, with two rival administrations: the Government of National Unity in Tripoli led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and the eastern government appointed by the House of Representatives and headed by Osama Hammad.
