FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — A migrant vessel carrying dozens of people sank over the weekend off the coast of Tobruk, a port city near Libya’s eastern border with Egypt.

The International Organization for Migration said Tuesday that at least 18 migrants died and 50 remain missing. Ten survivors have been rescued.

The incident underscores the deadly risks faced by migrants seeking safety and opportunity. Libya continues to serve as a major transit hub for refugees and migrants, many of whom endure exploitation, abuse, and life-threatening journeys across the Mediterranean.

Since the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has become a key departure point for those fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East. The latest tragedy adds to a growing toll of migrant deaths in the region.
