Wildfires that have raged in Los Angeles for three weeks have been brought under control, rescue officials say. The Palisades and Eaton fires have killed about 30 people and forced thousands to flee their homes.
The fires were the most destructive in the history of the second largest city in the United States, destroying more than 10,000 homes over an area of 150 square kilometers. Material damage is estimated to run into hundreds of billions of dollars.
Both fires started on January 7. The cause of their ignition is still under investigation. The fires were fueled by exceptional drought and strong winds. According to researchers, climate change has clearly increased the likelihood of similar fires.
