Gunmen shot dead ten people in a village inhabited by Alawites in central Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Saturday.

According to the organization, the attack took place in the village of Arza in the northern part of Hama province.

Syria’s ousted president Bashar al-Assad belonged to the Alawite religious minority, which is considered a sub-branch of Shiism.

Since the December revolution, Alawites have been concerned about their position under the new government, which is mainly composed of Sunni Muslims.
