FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – May 2025 was the second warmest May on record globally, with an average surface temperature of 15.79 degrees Celsius, exceeding the 1991-2020 average by 0.52 degrees and the pre-industrial 1850-1900 average by 1.4 degrees.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that while the temperature increase did not surpass the 1.5-degree threshold set by the Paris Agreement, it underscores the ongoing trend of global warming. The past decade has been among the hottest recorded.

Carlo Buontempo, director of the service, said May 2025 briefly interrupted a 22-month streak of temperatures exceeding 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, but warned that the threshold is likely to be exceeded again soon.
